Muckrakers by Selma Oetker

I had never seen or heard the word “muckrakers” until I read the book “THE PILGRIMS PROGRESS”, by John Bunyan. This is a wonderful book, an allegory about a Christian’s life journey.

The story actually begins with the man’s desperate search for how to be saved from this evil world and eternity in Hell. He is led to the Cross of Jesus Christ, and at the end of his life, he enters into Jesus’ Presence in Heaven.

On his life’s journey, he encounters many kinds of people, and various situations, as we all do.

One of the people he encountered along the way was called a muckraker. muckraker1The reason given for this “title” was that he was not interested in spiritual matters, but only in the things of the world.

He refused to look “up” to God, but only “down” to worldly matters, described as “sticks, straws, and dust of the floor”, and he had a muckrake in his hand, raking to himself these things he considered valuable.

Various people have many different attitudes and outlooks on life. There are some who feel that life is an unending cycle of work, sleep, eat, household chores, etc.

Many of them only ENDURE Monday through Friday, always waiting for the weekend, going to sporting events, to exercise themselves or pets, run, bike ride, to party, get drunk, gamble, whatever they think is “fun”, to escape the drudgery of life.

Some feel that life is meaningless, and try to escape through drugs or alcohol.

Others feel that life should be one big party, and live for, whether it’s ballgames, movies, video games, vacations, golf, casinos, boating, etc.

Many people escape into their jobs, living only to “climb up the ladder”, feeling that gives them self-importance.

Perhaps you are one who is self-satisfied, having a good job, nice home, a great spouse and children, and all the material possessions you want.pride2 pride1 pride4 pride3

Whichever category you are in, are you like the muckraker, only concerned with this life on earth?

Jesus said in the Protestant Christian Bible New Testament:

Mark 8:36 KJV 36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Mark 8:37 KJV – 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

What does it mean to lose your soul? It means you will spend eternity in the burning fires of Hell; yes, Hell is a real place, just as Heaven is.

What can you give in exchange for your soul? NOTHING!

On the other hand, it may surprise you to know that there is only ONE sin that can keep you out of Heaven! It doesn’t matter how many sins you’ve committed, or how bad they were.

John 3:16-20 NKJV – 16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

Jesus is the Son of God, the Light of the world, the ONLY WAY TO HEAVEN, THE ONLY SAVIOR OF MANKIND!

It is written in the Protestant Christian Bible New Testament, that when Jesus began His earthly ministry,in Matthew 4:17 NKJV – 17 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Repentance means to stop the way one is thinking and acting. To be contrite for your actions. Repentance in the Old Testament is very clear; the Jewish people and their proselytes were to obey only the Laws of Moses. Repentance in the New Testament is also very clear. The New Covenant that Jesus spoke about at the Last Supper can be summed up by Jesus’s one command … if you love me you’ll keep my teachings and my commands… Jesus’ teachings and commands are found only in one Book, the Protestant Christian Bible New Testament. If a follower of Jesus does not obey ONLY these commands then he/she is not a Spiritually Born Again Christian; they are only the lost religionists.

John 3:3-7 NLT – 3 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” 4 “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” 5 Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’

Whether you are satisfied with your life, or miserable and hate life, death is only the end of life on earth. Don’t be deluded in thinking you will go to Heaven because you are a good person. Don’t believe the lie that Life just ENDS when you die.

God WANTS everyone to go to Heaven, but

He does not give out any free passes!
